The Power of Social Media Algorithms: My First 60K View Short Video on Xiao Hong Shu

Have you ever wondered how social media algorithms work? Well, I certainly did. And my recent experience with Xiao Hong Shu, a popular social media platform in China, taught me a lot about the power of these algorithms.

It all started with me simply posting one or two videos on Xiao Hong Shu without any clear purpose or strategy. Needless to say, those videos did not perform well at all, and only my friends viewed them. However, my cousin sister Angel, a successful Key Opinion Leader (KOL), gave me some tips on how to make better videos. She suggested that I find a trending topic and shoot a video about it.

After studying some of the most successful Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) on the platform, it became clear that having a defined theme was critical to gaining traction on social media.

Why is a consistent theme so important? It's simple: the algorithm needs to understand what your account is all about to recommend your content to the right people. If your content is all over the place, it'll be harder for the algorithm to categorize it and show it to your target audience. (LOL, now my account content is all over the place. I will definitely create a new account soon).

After doing some research, I discovered a beautiful place called BomBoo Hills, and I decided to make a video about it. I used my mobile phone to capture the beauty of the place, and I posted it on Xiao Hong Shu. To my surprise, the video started to get views and likes, and it quickly reached 60K views. The video also did well on TikTok, reaching 59K views.

This experience taught me that social media algorithms are powerful tools that can amplify the reach of your content beyond your immediate circle of friends and followers. When you post content on social media, it's not just your friends who see it. The algorithm determines who sees your content based on factors such as relevance, engagement, and recency.

Here are some key takeaways from my experience:

Find a Trending Topic: The algorithm favors content that is relevant and timely. So, if you want your content to perform well, you need to find a trending topic that people are interested in.

Be Consistent: If you want the algorithm to understand what your account is all about, you need to have a consistent theme for your content. If you're an IT person like me, your account should focus on IT-related topics.

Use an Eye-Catching Cover Image: The cover image is the first thing people see when they come across your video. It's important to use an eye-catching image that grabs people's attention and makes them want to watch your video.

In conclusion, my first 60K view short video on Xiao Hong Shu taught me a lot about the power of social media algorithms. By understanding how these algorithms work, you can create content that resonates with your target audience and gets more views and engagement. So, if you're looking to build your presence on social media, take some time to understand how the algorithms work and use that knowledge to your advantage.
